About Us
The European Sepsis Alliance is part of the Global Sepsis Alliance, an international non-profit charity organization. The ESA was founded in 2018 under the auspices of former European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, with the aim to raise awareness for sepsis as well as to reduce sepsis deaths in Europe.
Our Vision
Europe free of sepsis.
What We Do
Lobby for Change
The European Sepsis Alliance works with its members, governments, the European Union, the World Health Organization, and engaged individuals to change how sepsis is prioritized, diagnosed, and treated within Europe, as laid out by the WHO Resolution on Sepsis.
ESA Working Groups
The ESA has established the following three working groups:
Patient and Family Support
Policy and Stakeholder Engagement
Research
Educate on Sepsis
Each year in Europe, more than 3.4 million individuals develop sepsis. 700,000 do not survive, and an additional one-third of survivors die during the following year. Many survivors face life- long consequences, such as new physical, mental, and cognitive problems. The ESA wants to educate all Europeans about all aspects of sepsis.
Develop and Implement a Pan-European Sepsis Strategy
Bringing together all stakeholders, including patients and their families, with the aim to increase understanding that improvement of early recognition and appropriate management of sepsis must become the keystone of the Pan-European infection management strategy.
Raise Awareness on Social Media
One key part to fighting sepsis in Europe is awareness. Studies show that only 6 % to 50 % have heard the term sepsis before, highly depending on the country. To raise awareness for sepsis, we bring relevant information about sepsis and the work of the ESA to you on Twitter directly.
